According to HALA's handy dandy little blog the disco-revivalists have completed their new album. This is excellent news for all those who are familiar with the group's INSANELY good and groundbreaking 2008 self-titled debut album. Here's the quote from the blog:
"HERE IS THE SCOOP- RECORD FINISHED.
last
day in vienna. it has been a very colorful and interesting ride
finishing this record. late nights and lots and lots and lots of work.
big ups to patrick pulsinger for the hard work. and big ups to wolfram
for the hospitality and laughter. i will give one word to sum up the
record: emotional.
kim ann, shaun j wright, aerea negrot, mark pistel and moi, andy butler, will see you on the road soon."
HALA have a lot to live up to. More specifics to come.
Badu has raised the bar, again. CNN.com is reporting that the neo-soul visionary stripped down to her birthday suit for the filming of her new music video "Window Seat". Sounds pretty Badu-esque, yea? Here's the rub: she did it at the site of the JFK assasination. I've never truly understood Badu, I've just always loved her music. Once again--especially this time--her video has rendered me speechless.
K. So The BIRD and the BEE have a hard-on for Hall & Oates-but who doesn't?
In a rather cleverly designed marketing campaign the duo have previewed 9 songs from their upcoming album--Interpreting The Masters Volume 1: A Tribute To Daryl Hall
And John Oates--on 9 different websites. It's a musical scavenger hunt! The links are provided below. In support of the new album the duo played a once-in-a-lifetime show at LA's landmark El Rey Theater last week. Guess who showed up...JOHN-FUCKING-OATES!!! CHECK IT:
Mega hot. CLICK HERE to read the LA Times review of the show.
HELLO OUT THERE! Wanted to let you know that yours truly has finally been published in FILTER MAGAZINE. Issue 39--with Beck and Charlotte Gainsbourg on the cover--is available for purchase now. The mag can be picked up at Borders, Barnes & Noble, Urban Outfitters and most independent music stores nationwide.
My review of the new LOS CAMPESINOS! album can be found on page 100.
Okay, first thing's first. The Wikipedia definition:
"Yacht rock" is a name for the popular soft rock that peaked between the years of 1975 and 1984. Significant "yacht rockers" include Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross,Goldstar and Toto. In the musical sense, yacht rock refers to the highly polished brand of soft rock that emanated from Southern California during the late 1970s and early 1980s. In part, the term relates to the stereotype of the yuppieyacht owner, enjoying cocaine
and smooth music while out for a sail. Additionally, since sailing was
a popular leisure activity in Southern California, many "yacht rockers"
made nautical references in their lyrics, videos, and album artwork,
particularly the anthemic track "Sailing" by Christopher Cross. Yacht Rock music is commonly described as, "A little bit better than elevator music!"
Couldn't have put it better myself, friends. Before you get too far, you should familiarize yourself with a few of the original Yacht Rock videos. Here's a start: www.yachtrock.com
